IITK TROLL

So I've been bitten by the troll bug. And I decided to troll on the buy-sell sites which spring up in my campus at the start of every semester. Seldom they are maintained and soon disappear. Hope u'll enjoy it. :)
PS: No offence intended, just for pure humor!

Life is a Mandelbrot

Mandelbrot Set
# Takneek 2010
# Written for competition - Science Meets Poetry [ 2nd Runners Up :-) ]

Life is not so simple and plain ,
So i’ll take help of the complex plane.
With the domain having its edges fixed,
Doesn’t our timeline also has a limit ?

Iterating each point on this very plane ,
Some points vanish and some escape ;
But there are few points stubborn enough ,
Who continue to circle around and say that the iteration is not enough.
They depict the problems which we face in our lives ,
Some vanish , some grow and some with which we compromise.

Fill some colour to this fractal array and see,
The beauty comparable to daughters of Eve.
Life is not pale, my dear,
The diversity and colour surely gives us a reason to cheer.

Still our Soul is just like a sailing boat,
Travelling endlessly on the never-ending borderline of Mandelbrot.

Triathlon

#written 18-12-2011

I set my foot on the sandy beach,
Nervous coz i was just a novice;
It was then I first saw her,
The one who took my breath away;
Her mesmerizing beauty,
I couldn't understand;
There she was - The woman of my dreams,
A sight I couldn't believe.
Her eyes, captured in my mental pic,
And hair smoother than silk.
My words couldn't describe her
The angel, my eyes had never before seen.

The trumpet blew ,the race began
Swiftly left the shore as fast as I can
Suddenly I was hit by the waves
All hopes lost as there was no escape
Eyelids closed, I was lost in this abyss
But there was someone waiting,
So I didn't quit.

Cycling race was soon to begin
The day was beautiful and i knew exactly where i was heading!
Down the lane and across the valley,
I biked with full spirit.
The day was mine, I was miles ahead,
But fate, my dear , had other plans ,
I Stumbled, I fell, I remounted my bike,
And silently crossed the finishing line ..

Final day had set in,
I entered the stadium packed to brim
And I saw her standing silent and still.
she neva looked at me, but I, I could feel,
I was still in love with her, in love with her, indeed.
Soon there was a bang and race began,
She was smiling, cheering,
And amazing she looked in her white hat,
I ran in full spirit overtaking as many as i can
The final lap and there she was ,
Standing waiting for me with spread hands
I sprinted , crossed the line ,
Embraced her with a whole hearted smile,
I lost the race ,still, nothing else I had wanted in my life.

Let others cheer the winning man,
There's one I hold worth while;
It is he who does the best he can,
Then loses with a smile!

Internship Hunt - Act I Scene II [HUL : Restraint]

Previously : Act I Scene I [HUL : Incitement]

The GD was scheduled to start at 8.
We had half an hour to eat something as the entire process spans overnight.
First Group Discussions followed by Personal Interviews.
Preparation plays an important role. We have sessions on how to 'crack' the GD where seniors who bagged internship last year come and give their fundas on body posture, way of talking, even teach you the appropriate way to smile.
But this knowledge was quite contrary to my nature. I like smiling all the time. My voice is a bit louder than the normal. I like to make direct eye contact with the person I speak to. And so I had to restrain all these characteristics of mine.
Another part of the preparation is mugging up Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics. One of my winges spent an entire week mugging up these courses. Honestly, I had not spent even a millisecond on that as according to my calculation my chances were 1/80 which was quite demoralizing.
I thought the much better way to spend that time was by investing it in FOSSDEV(Free and Open Source Software Development) competition which was my brainchild, an initiative to set up the culture of software development in our campus. It was a 10 day event and its judging had to be done during our inter hall techfest - Takneek. After all I had made a promise to the people who entrusted me with this responsibility that I won't let them down. Driven by my passion, am I a mad-man? After all who messes up with his chances of making a good career.
By the time I reached my hostel, 15 minutes had already passed. The rest of the time was spent just walking towards the Student Placement Office where my GD was scheduled.
The selected candidates occupied the conference room which was not so capacious to accommodate all 60 selected candidates. Now the probability of bagging this intern was 1/30, increased by a factor more than twice.
My GD group comprised Amol, Hunaid, Amarjeet, Rahul, Saxena, Sharique, Kashif and me. The topic was laid in form of a case study with the following keywords- "Two machines .. industry .. chose one .. pollution ... environment .. purchase cost .. maintenance .. labour .. etc".
It kick started. Amol presented his views, followed by Abhishek, followed by Sharique shouting out his points out loud. It was chaos. I freaked out. Restraining myself. It was over within 20 minutes. I realized that I over-controlled myself and ended up uttering just a single line on picking up the eco-friendly machine, that too in a fumbled tone. Results were announced. My 1st GD ended miserably. I was disappointed. I realized those fundas were good for nothing, resolving to be natural next time.I reached my room and finished coding the problem statement for FOSSDEV. I was not ready for this corporate world I guess !

Internship Hunt - Act I Scene I [HUL : Incitement]

Previously : Prologue

"Are you ready yet!"
"Bas ho gaya" - shouted back Rajat.
"Jaldi karo! Only 10 minutes left! The Pre-Placement Talk (PPT) will start."
Rajat came out, all dressed in formals like everyone else. We were all excited and tensed up. Companies have finally started knocking at our doors. No clue what will happen today, we started walking towards the Lecture Hall Complex where the Talk was scheduled.
Nearly every person of mechanical and chemical departments had applied for this company. Obviously who wouldn't, as this was the highest paid industrial internship offered in our respective departments.
Half an hour passed, L1 was almost full with young engineers. Each and everyone carried a tensed forehead.
I closed my eyes and went back in time. In this very lecture hall my 3rd semester Electrical Professor used to throw chalks at me for dozing off in his class. He used to boast that he was good at the game of cricket and had a good aim. But he had absolutely no idea who he was dealing with. It was just an ordinary day when...

The moment was right,
A chalk, gripped in between his fingers,
He was about to throw with all his might.
Just when it was about to attain its velocity,
And get into its trajectory.
I opened my eyelids,
Gave him a smile,
Frozen he stood,
And victory was mine.

"Hello , Everyone !" a HR official of the company entered intervening my thought process. I looked at my watch it was already an hour late. Five others accompanied him (including 1 female who looked like an iitian .. u get what I mean .. ehhh).
Surrounding me were many new faces who barely attend classes. They had a strange look on their face (woh kya kehte hai hindi mein .. sab ki phati padhi thi).
The HR gave us a quick presentation in form of a video. It was well tailored covering the incentives the company gave rather than showing us the nature of work. The session was over after a couple of questions asked by some enthusiasts, who were trying their best to get some recognition before the GD.
Soon they announced the shortlisted candidates for the GD/PI. I saw many disappointed faces discussing that CPI criteria is totally unfair to judge someone's ability. I barely bothered.
I was happy I made it through and was very excited. It was just a beginning and it felt good.

Internship Hunt - Prologue

"Winter is coming .." was the first episode of an awesome season of Game of Thrones.
But now when the winter season has truly arrived , I have realized the gravity of this phrase. I do not wish to leave my cozy bed and neither do I step outside my house to avoid hitting a cold breeze.
So I was lazy ?
I was bored ?
And more than anything else,
I was feeling cold.
.. wow it rhymes.
So the only way out was to resume blogging.
Now coming to toughest decision - TOPIC ...
I pondered over it a lot .. something which could have story-line and me as the protagonist .. something recent .. comprising drama , action , suspense , tragedy and more than everything else a good end :-) .. after all some people deserve to have their faith rewarded.
So the story is about My Internship Hunt and it will be divided into various parts covered in each blog post:
Act I    - HUL
Act II   - ITC
Act III  - Directi
Act IV  - Dassault Systèmes

Hope u'll enjoy it :)

MACFAIR'08

I came across this very old newspaper clipping which reminded me of Ankit Raj, an awesome person who taught me the value of teamwork !

Jamshedpur, Aug. 21: When steel city schools are in the habit of doing their hometown proud, why should DBMS English School be an exception?
Students of DBMS recently bagged the runners-up trophy at a global event, beating more than 70 national and international schools. It was the first time that the school participated in Macfair International, organised by City Montessori School in Lucknow, and were declared the second best team.
The DBMS students also won the first prize for their model to test the purity of transparent liquids using refraction. They also won the third prize in the mathematics quiz and were, finally, declared the runners-up at the four-day event that began on August 2.
DBMS was represented by seven students — Ankit Mahato, Ankit Raj, Rabi Shankar Guha, Debjyoti Banerjee, Sukanya Sharma, Mrinal Ranjan and Mukesh Kumar.
“It was a huge experience. We were a little nervous, but we mingled with other students and found we were on a par with them. We have the same potential but lack exposure. But the times are changing now,” said Debjyoti. "The standard of questions asked was good, but we were equally determined to win."said Ankit Mahato.
“The opportunity came along when the students enquired about the event on the web and wanted to take a shot. We just supported them and today they have made us proud. Teachers have just guided them. The students have won because of their out-of-the-box imagination,” said Sudha Mohan, a teacher. Mohan had accompanied the students on the tour.
